Odysseus
Review, Sort Of dept.
So, I know. It’s a ridiculous to say. Cause, I mean, “On the Waterfront.” “To Have and Have Not.” “City Lights.” “The Kid.” “Napoleon Dynamite.” “Stranger than Paradise.” “Rebel Without a Cause.” “The Godfather.” “Apocalypse Now.” “Goodfellas.” “Zelig.” “Cuckoo’s Nest.” “Don’t Look Back.” “Stop Making Sense.” “Harold and Maude.” “Sullivan’s Travels.” “Duck Soup.” “The Bicycle Thief.”
I know, I know.
I know.
But still. Maybe, just maybe, “Odysseus” is the best movie I’ve ever seen.
‘Cause here’s the thing.
(CONFESSION! Sorry, Cousin Susan):
I’ve never read The Odyssey.
But, I guess, somehow, I’ve known and heard all my life about:
The Sirens.
Cyclops.
The Trojan Horse.
Hades.
The Face That Launched a Thousand Ships.
Athena.
Agamemnon.
Poseidon.
Zeus.
And all of that.
And suddenly, there it was, all of it, larger than life!
And you could understand what was going on!
I think I’d feared rhymed couplets (sorry, again, Susan).
But it was all in good old plain American-style English.
There was no “He whose loins from whence I sprungeth forth….”
But just….Dad.
So that was good.
Also—it was pretty gory, and very violent and all. But for all that? Not a single gun! I know, I know. But still. It bears saying.
And sometimes the popcorn, and the coke, and the milk duds….
Sometimes it’s all just right.
The movie was three hours long, so I’m glad I had the milk duds or I would have definitely run out of popcorn and coke, and they hadn’t even gotten back to Ithaca!
So, yeah. Yes. It might be. It just might be. The best. Movie. I’ve seen. For me. Hit me right. All that.
And get this—I didn’t even see it in IMAX!
